Eden Gardens Kolkata: Past History
Set at the North end of the Maidan in Kolkata, the iconic Eden Gardens was named after Emily and Fanny Eden, the sister of Lord Auckland, Governor-General from 1836-1842. It was also the first stadium in India where floodlights and a huge electronic scoreboard were installed.
The stadium had to be renewed twice since its start, once in 1987 and then in 2011 for the ODI World Cup. Beginning called 'Auckland Circus Gardens' 1841, it was later renamed the Eden Gardens which is popular today.

The deck at the Eden Gardens Stadium mostly aids the batters. As the boundary size is not too big, batters have an edge to get the big runs. Pacers tend to obtain some bounce. However, spinners play an important role in the match's latter stage.
Eden Gardens Stats and Trivia
Rohit Sharma recorded the highest individual ODI score in the sport history, 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014. In the IPL, Rajat Patidar hit the highest-ever individual score with 112 (54 balls) for RCB, against LSG in 2022.
Kuldeep Yadav is the third bowler for India to get a hat-trick in an ODI against Australia after Chetan Sharma and Kapil Dev on 21 Sept 2017 at this venue. The Eden Gardens has also been in the eye of controversies as second hand in the 1996 World Cup semi-final. India jumped to 120 for 8 while chasing 252 against Sri Lanka, after a dramatic collapse during which seven wickets fell for 22. The noisy crowd threw bottles on the field and set fires in the stands.
Despite the small dimensions, RCB recorded the lowest-ever total in the IPL at this venue as they were dismissed for 49 runs against the home side KKR on April 23, 2017.
